5 Immunity boosters through Ayurveda 🙌

Just like in modern medicine, in Ayurveda too, since ancient time, have strategies to boost our natural immune system and defend us from harmful microbiomes.

The body's immune system is most powerful and has all the defence mechanism to fight against any invaders and maintain our optimal health. It's only when we start developing defaulted habits like unhealthy lifestyle, processed, junk food, sedentary habits (sitting for long hours), alcohol, smoking, using chemical products, the immune system get weaker and we become susceptible to different chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune conditions) and diseases. So, the onus lies entirely on us so that we realise and correct our daily habits and enjoy a healthy life.

Some simple ways to boost our immune system are:

1. Gargling/oil pulling: As soon as we get up from bed in the morning, we can gargle every day with warm water to clear the throat and respiratory tract. Gargling can stimulate the pallet muscles and help activate the parasympathetic system (relaxation tone). Oil pulling in Ayurveda is another practice by which the mouth can be cleaned of any residual germs that have accumulated overnight. Before brushing teeth, a teaspoon of coconut or sesame oil can be taken, rinse inside the mouth and spill out.

2. Yoga: Every day in spite of a hectic schedule, it is mandatory to do Yoga or exercise for at least an hour. Bodily movements are necessary for mind, body's optimal functioning. It is important to meditate for a couple of minutes every day to maintain a calm mind.

3. Breathing exercises: Deep slow breathing exercises like Pranayama is very necessary to clear the respiratory tract and maintain an optimal lung function.

4. Food: Natural plant-based foods which are high in nutrients, locally available should be cooked and eaten freshly prepared. This is the best way, the maximum nutrients can be obtained. Preserved food loses its vitality.

5: Herbs and spices: According to Ayurveda, herbs and spices like Tulsi (basil), cinnamon, turmeric, black pepper, ginger, Amla (Indian gooseberry) and raisins are efficient immune booster. Every day, we should have these food items or some of them in any form or the other. Rice and pulses are given due importance in Ayurveda along with vegetables and fruits for daily intake. Ghee (Cow) or clarified butter is considered very essential for the body.
